本書分四部分：小說、散文、詩歌、戲劇。每部分首先概述了該文學(xué)體裁的定義、包含的類別以及其構(gòu)成要素，接著從不同的類別和角度精選了西方文學(xué)史上經(jīng)典作者的代表作品，并對所選作者和作品做了簡要介紹，作品后有對該作品的評論和供學(xué)生討論的思考題。小說部分包括希臘神話、伊索寓言、安徒生童話、霍桑短篇小說等；散文部分有柏拉圖、培根、梭羅等著名作家的哲理議論文等；詩歌部分從敘事、抒情等方面列入了從荷馬史詩、莎士比亞十四行詩、英國浪漫主義的自由體頌歌到艾略特的現(xiàn)代主義試驗體。戲劇部分包括古希臘悲劇、莎士比亞悲劇、易卜生的現(xiàn)實主義戲劇、貝克特荒誕派戲劇等。
