At noon the Parsee gave the signal for departure. The country soon be-gan to look very wild. The great forests gave place to copses of tamarindsand dwarf palms, after which came wide-spreading, arid plains, bristlingwith wretched shrubs and dotted with great boulders of syenite. The wholeof this part of upper Bundelkhand, but little visited by travellers, is inhabit-ed by a fanatical people hardened in the most terrible practices of theHindu religion. The English have been unable to establish their rule effi-ciently over this region, subject as it is to the influence of the rajahs, whomit would have been no easy matter to teach in their inaccessible fastnessesin the Vindhia Mountains.More than once troops of fierce-looking Indians were descried makingwrathful gestures as they watched the great quadruped speeding by. Butthe Parsee avoided them as much as possible, for he thought it unsafe tomeet them. They saw few animals in the course of that day; here and therea monkey or two, that scampered away making endless contortions andgrimaces, to Passepartout's great delight.

作者：（法國(guó)）凡爾納凡爾納(1828～1905)是法國(guó)小說(shuō)家。從小向往航海，曾離家當(dāng)見習(xí)水手。十九歲在巴黎學(xué)習(xí)法律，畢業(yè)后不愿當(dāng)法官，為劇院創(chuàng)作劇本，后以創(chuàng)作科幻小說(shuō)為主。自《氣球上的五星期》獲得成功之后，每年都要發(fā)表一兩部新作，作品共達(dá)六十六部之多，總稱為《在已知和未知的世界中奇異地漫游》。其中著名的三部曲《格蘭特船長(zhǎng)的兒女》、《海底兩萬(wàn)里》和《神秘島》是其代表作，《八十天環(huán)游地球》是凡爾納最受歡迎的作品之一。其他重要作晶還有《地心游記》、《從地球到月球》、《環(huán)游月球》、《十五歲的船長(zhǎng)》、《蓓根的五億法郎》、《機(jī)器島》等。他在科學(xué)知識(shí)的基礎(chǔ)上大膽地設(shè)想和預(yù)言未來(lái)，所作的許多科學(xué)幻想，在今天都得以實(shí)現(xiàn)。他也因此被稱為“世界科幻小說(shuō)之父”。
